Capistrano

Played again at the Mission San Juan Capistrano as a quartet last Saturday, what a perfect setting for a gig! Bassist Sam Johnson took some photos of me playing solo before we got on the stage:

I’ll be playing at Café 21 this Saturday with the phenomenal drummer Julien Cantelm and then on Sunday for our regular Paper Moon duo gig. Both are 7 to 10pm, see you downtown!

Performing with the great Flavio Cucchi this Sunday!

A couple of years ago we were lucky enough to have Flavio Cucchi perform at our guitar studio Paper Moon Music. Flavio is a world-class classical guitarist from Italy, and this weekend he returns to San Diego for a recital in Presidio Park. I’ve been asked to accompany him for this show, which is a great honor, we’ll be playing duet arrangements from Chick Corea’s suite “Children’s Songs” which are terrific little ambient, cinematic themes originally written for piano. Check out the Shows page for more details. Now off to practice for this concert…  here’s Flavio playing some of my favorite guitar pieces from Antonio Lauro:

Recording frenzy, and Sea & Smoke this Sunday!

I’ve been finishing up the final recordings for my duo’s album of Argentine tangos, I’ll be starting the mixing for this cd this week. Meanwhile, we’re working on another album of original material plus a few covers of classical/art music like Erik Satie’s “Gnossienne No. 1” with our own improvisations and the great Brazilian choro “Santa Morena” by Jacob do Bandolim.  Also, I’ve got a full album of original solo material that I’m currently recording which will be an eclectic mix of  things, some ambient movie music-type of interludes as well as full compositions with inflections of gypsy jazz, flamenco, and some weird time  signatures!

You can catch me playing in Del Mar this Sunday with bassist Sam Johnson at Sea & Smoke from 10am to 1pm…

This Summer…

I’ve been pretty busy the last month – rehearsing for the Paper Moon concert and the Cultura Flamenca show (picture below). Now that those are over, I’m focusing on composing and recording for the rest of the summer. Joe Amato and I are finishing up our album of Argentine tangos, which should be finished in August, as well as an album of original material, and I’m also working on a solo album which should be released before the end of the year. Most of the gigs I’ll be playing in July and August are private events, but check the calendar page for updated shows (like Sea & Smoke on July 27 and in downtown San Diego on July 25). Here’s hoping you’re having a great summer!
